AGENDA ITEM: Strengthening Cooperation in the Eastern Europe

The agenda for the NATO Committee at MUNAAL'24, focusing on Strengthening Cooperation in Eastern Europe, will involve discussions on enhancing collective security and political stability in the region. Ambassadors will discuss issues such as defense cooperation, military readiness, and cybersecurity to counter threats posed by aggressive foreign powers and non-state actors.

Another aspect to be discussed by the ambassadors is energy security and, more specifically, their support to Eastern European states in developing resilient infrastructure. The committee intends to preserve and nurture closer ties within the NATO alliance to ensure a unified front in the face of geopolitical challenges. Eastern Europe faces a range of challenges, both security-related and economic, that have significant implications for regional stability and NATO's agenda.

One of the foremost challenges is the ongoing geopolitical tension with Russia, particularly in the aftermath of the annexation of Crimea and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This furthering territorial aggression, leaving Eastern European NATO members, such as Poland and the Baltic States, vulnerable to potential incursions.

These nations are also dealing with the broader threat of hybrid warfare, including cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and attempts to destabilize democratic institutions. Since many Eastern European countries, especially those close to Russia, rely heavily on Russian natural gas, making them susceptible to political pressure through energy supply disruptions, ambassadors will come up with solutions regarding energy dependency.
